The TV ads have begun advising us of the forthcoming postal vote to indicate our preference on changing the definition of marriage in Australian law – i.e., from being only between a man and woman, to also being between people of the same sex.
As Christians we believe that marriage is only between a man and a woman, and for life. This is because God created human beings this way (Gen 1:26-28; 2: 22-30). Therefore this is the only understanding and practice of sexuality affirmed by Jesus Christ (Mt 19:4,5). This understanding is also based upon and reflects the marriage between Jesus Christ, God’s Son, the Bridegroom, and His divinely appointed Bride, the human race who love Him, the Church, to whom He remains eternally faithful (Eph 5:21-33; Rev 19:6-9; 21). Marriage is therefore the excellent gift of God the Father to us His creatures, for our goodness, blessing and joy!
This involves a great challenge to all those who are same sex attracted, and to all of us, since we are called to love all people, offer to them the redeeming grace of Christ, and welcome them within our church family.
With this understanding of marriage, the Bible also teaches and calls us all to follow a sexual ethic of faithfulness in marriage, and celibacy in singleness.
Through faith in the redeeming grace of Christ, we all need to embrace marriage as God the Father has created and redeemed it to be, and in that same grace continue to hold out this excellent gift to all people.
Grace and cheers,
Rev. Jonathan Button
