God names Himself, Father.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father,… hallowed be your name…’ (Lk 11:1,2).

This can create a crisis for us, because some of us have fathers who are not good, and who can in fact sometimes be terrible – even the worst! And all of us who are fathers know that none of us are what we should be. How then can we relate to God in a positive way, or even at all?!

The thing is, God is not just like a father – i.e., like a human father (possibly a terrible one!), on a divine scale. That would be scary! No, God is The Father. i.e., – the original, true, perfect Father (Eph 3:14). The Father who loved the world – us – so much, that He gave His own Son in order to save, heal and bless us forever! (Jn 3:16)….

When, through the reconciling grace of Jesus Christ, we come into intimate relationship with Him as our Father, we as His dear children, His love can heal us of the damage of failed fatherhood, and restore failing fathers.

Grace and cheers,
